A made up holiday I like

The other day a mom was commenting on how her children classified holidays. They wanted to know why they didn't get school off for Valentine's Day, and the mom's response was that it is a made up holiday. So now her kids are going through their list of holidays and asking which ones are "made up."

It cracked me up, because even though they are "made up" I still really like some of them... like Mother's Day!

Sure, we need to honor others in our lives and I love that there is a day that honors my role as a mother. And I might get presents! Mothers Day gifts can be really fun, and I like the tradition of giving flowers too. It used to be that some women got a corsage to wear at church on Mother's Day. That isn't something that we did in my family, but I notice in May that some women still have them.

Dotflowers offers fresh flowers, straight from flower farmers to anywhere in the US, and arrangements from local florists. Or if you want to add something extra, they have gift baskets and gourmet food. Dotflowers is devoted to helping give the right impression, so you know if you want to impress me, they might be a good place to start.

actually...Valentine's Day isn't made up so much as it was originally St. Valentine's Day...as observed in the Catholic Church and then at some point Hallmark decided that it should be one of their holidays. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentines or try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_day to learn more about your day...Mother's Day.

Aren't all holidays made up by someone, be it the RC Church or Hallmark? ;-)

If the kids were old enough i think I would have said something like, "There are different kinds of holidays--some are religious holidays in which we set aside special times of worship (like Christmas and Easter); some are national holidays in which we remember things in history (like Independence Day and Thanksgiving); and others are cultural holidays that we do for fun (e.g., Ground Hog Day, Halloween, etc.). Some holidays fit into more than one category, and others are just really important to most everyone, so those are the ones that we get time off from school and work to spend time celebrating as a family or community."

Of course, my five year old would get that...but not Izzy. :-)
