My little protester: Protesting the BCS at the Division 1 AA Championship Subdivison

Damon and Josiah protest the BCSWell, life has calmed down long enough that I have uploaded the pictures from the Championship game on Friday evening. The game was a fun one to watch and the App State fans were rocking!

This game has become a family tradition for us. And it looks like Damon and Josiah dressing up and protesting the BCS (Bowl Champsionship Series) will become another tradition too.

Last year, they were Santa and Big Foot. As Josiah mentioned, this year their theme was a bit more cerebral. Damon took two graduation gowns (mine and Austina's) and added stripes and panels in the front. Then he used velveteen and made post-graduate hoods and 8 sided tams.

The point was they were dressed as university Presidents. And not any university Presidents, these Presidents oppose the BCS.

Anti-BCS medallionAs I understand it (and Damon will correct me if I am wrong), the point is that alumni from schools in the BCS should band together and put pressure on the trustees to fire the Presidents who oppose using a championship system like the Division I AA (aka Division I Championship Subdivision).

It is no secret that the bowl system is powered by money and the schools will get a lot of money for playing in their respective bowls. But Damon has a plan that allows for a playoff system, a true national champion, and other bowls as well. There will still be money for the schools with the added bonus of a real National Football Championship.

Anti-BCS signageThe signs that Damon made were three-sided scepter-like and had three messages.

"Fire University Presidents who oppose a playoff."
"Forget the BCS this is the Real National Championship."
"Playoffs work every year."

The great thing about these signs was that when Damon and Josiah took to cruising the crowds (and eventually storming the field), the signs were noticeable enough that I could pick them out of the 20,000 plus people there.

Happy protestorsUnfortunately there have been no reports of them being on tv this year (unlike last year when ESPN told them to hold still while they focused the camera on them). But in all we had a ton of fun. I was treated to a very heated debated between the guys about who will win the "mythical" championship. Damon is being bold and declaring that Florida will beat Ohio. And if he is wrong... well, Josiah has something planned.

Finding our seats I took over 300 pictures with my new camera. Alot of the pictures of the action on the field were with the burst mode, so that makes for a lot of pictures. I narrowed it down to 80 or so. All the pictures are located here, including one of me!

Actually, I realize that firing the Presidents and Chancellors is too drastic for most alumni. What I'm really hoping for is that since the average turnover for university presidents is 5 years, alumni of BCS schools will pressure their search committees to hire presidents who support a playoff. That way, we should be able to get a playoff in about 5 years.
