I.C.E- in car entertainment

I firmly believe that my parenting experience would be a bit more harried if it were not for the magic of television and the DVD player. I do not think that Fuller watches too much TV and I do not think it is realistic to expect him to never watch TV. Our family is a television watching family and that wasn’t going to change because Fuller came along.

Before Fuller’s second Christmas, Damon’s parents gave us a portable DVD player to help us with our long car trips to Ohio and Alabama. We don’t keep it on the entire trip, but we let Fuller watch movies to keep him occupied for a few hours.

Three friends of ours recently purchased mini-vans. For one of these friends I know that the when it came to the in car audio systems, high on the requirement list was a DVD player.

Dixons specialize in I.C.E (in car entertainment)- everything from pimping the CD player, maximizing the speakers, and even those precious in car DVD players. If you know exactly what you want, Dixons has a great search feature. And if you don’t know, it is easy to browse via their range options. And I appreciate that their site allows for comparison shopping, which always helps when narrowing down my options.

We love our portable DVD player, we have even used it to let Fuller watch movies in his room while we worked on the house. When we get to the point to consider our next car, I know we will seriously take into consider the I.C.E for our family.

This is always an interesting debate for me. I grew up in a tv-less home as did my husband and I think that I benefited from that. Recently I have started letting Jeremiah (19months old) watch a veggie tales movie for 1/2 an hour while I make dinner. It really helps at that time of day. I have noticed though that he has now become obssessed and is more likely to ask to watch "tales tales" at other times of the day. I too am realizing that expecting my child to never watch tv is unrealistic - but I don't want him to be preoccupied either..... A hard balance.
Anyway, we will probably purchase a portable dvd player before our next trip to the Netherlands - 9 hours in a plane is a long time.
But I will say that I have a pet peeve of seeing kids in the back of a mini-van or SUV watching cartoons on the way to the grocery store. Can we agree as a society that kids can make it to the store and back without needing tv?
