Trick or Treat
I went to the grocery store this evening and there it was… Halloween Candy. Candy corn, mini chocolates, caramel delights, and the other stuff that make dentists really, really excited. (Rabbit trail: Yesterday I had a cherry Jolly Rancher and the filling that fills my front tooth came out. This is a filling that was there because I chipped that tooth in 11th grade, in Belgium. Stupid Jolly Rancher.)
So I guess it is time to start thinking about costumes. When I was growing up our family rule was that we were not allowed to buy anything for costumes. It all had to come from our house. That meant McDad and McMom’s closets were raided and McMom had an excuse to buy new makeup on November 1st!
Then I met Damon. If you know Damon you know he has a talent for dreaming up a costume and actually following through with the design by sewing it all himself. I think the year he made Super Friends costumes for all his super friends was a banner year for him. And of course there is the Auburn Elvis costume that has helped Damon get his more than 15 minutes of fame on TV.
Making Fuller’s costumes for the past two years has been great. Fuller’s first Halloween he was a hobbit and Damon was Treebeard. Damon carried Fuller in the baby bjorn, which was decorated to look like part of the tree. It was a great concept.
Last year Fuller went as a vintage Auburn football player. I crocheted the helmet and the costume was perfect for a little one who was still crawling in the dirt, since we used old sweatpants that were actually a size too small.
If you don’t have a Damon in your house to make your costumes, there is always buying kids Halloween costumes. Getting a quality costume can really serve you well because you can reuse the costume for other kids, or dissect the costume to make other costumes for later. Find one that is made of good fabric and not plastic. It will last longer and give your kid that one of a kind look. Plus, playing dress up is a big part of growing up.
Unless you never grow up. Then Damon can show you how to make your own.
The last two costumes I have gotten for Morgen I have love, the first one I got was an Elmo costume from Target and oh my the quality of that costume was awesome, then Wal-mart had princess dresses last year and for the price of the costume they were actually really good quality she still has her princess costume that she uses for dress up now, so for $14.99 it has lasted almost a year and it is still going strong, so I got my money's worth I think.
