The newest member of the family

When I was younger one of our favorite family shows was the Cosby Show. Every Thursday night we watched the antics of Rudy, Vanessa, Theo, Denise, Sondra, Claire, and Cliff. Add in Peter, Cockroach, Kenny (aka Bud), and other various friends and the hilarity was just so memorable.

One of the memorable episodes was one where Cliff got a juicer. Claire was very against the purchase of the juicer because Cliff was a kind of appliance addict. She points out all of the appliances and their current resting place- a cabinet of rarely, if ever used appliances. Claire then asks Theo to clean out the cabinet to make room for the newest tenant, the juicer.

Well, that episode and Claire's speech have stuck with me in my adult life, as I now have cabinets and appliances. Sometimes the appliances live in the cabinets. But I really want to make sure that I don't become like Cliff, gathering items that I really don't need or will use.

Today UPS brought the latest addition to our appliance family. Meet the tortilla maker.

This purchase is totally justified because we eat a lot of tortillas and would probably eat more if we didn't keep running out of them because of the aforementioned eating.

We reason, if we have a bread maker that we use constantly (thank you Eloise!) then why wouldn't we use a tortilla maker?

Damon made the dough this afternoon and after the requisite hour of sitting, I divided up the dough into small rounds ready for pressing and cooking. I messed up the first two, but Fuller didn't know the difference. I finally figured out that I didn't have to press as hard as I was and I sort of got the hang of it.

Eventually we plan on branching out and making veggie tortillas (to help Fuller fullfill my daily requirement of his vegetable intake). But for now, the flour, water, butter, and whatever else is enough and we welcome our torilla maker into our little appliance family. The waffle maker is going to be a bit jealous at first, but next Saturday when I make the twenty or so waffles to freeze, it will realize it too is still needed.

Oh man, I have wanted one of these for years now. I keep questioning whether the space it takes up will be worth it in our small kitchen. But we also eat a lot of tortillas, and when i make them by hand they aren't quite thin enough or uniform enough to really work.

I think it is totally worth it. The only thing is that the maker is for an 8 inch tortilla and we usually by the 10 or 12 inch ones. In the long run it doesn't really matter, but it makes for interesting wraps!
