Welcome Home!

Up the street from my house there is cheering and yelling, some honking of car horns, and heated excitement. Up the street from my house five little kids’ Daddy just came home from being away in Iraq for more than a year.

Anytime I see a military reunion, especially one that involves little kids, I get choked up and a few tears slip down my cheek. I remember that ache, that wonder of, “Where is my daddy and when will he be home?” And I remember that joy, the elation, of seeing him again, knowing that he was back with his family, in a familiar territory.

I never wrote a Welcome Home entry for my dad when he came back from Iraq in September, but I want him to know that I am thrilled that he is back. I enjoyed his emails while he was away and have enjoyed hearing some of his war stories. But mostly, I like that he is around to visit with us in Kentucky, to talk to on the phone, and to comment on our blog.

So, Daddy, welcome home.

And Andy, welcome home too.

I remember that feeling as well, one that my children will not have to know anymore! We had a tribute to our veterans at church on Sunday and it was very emotional! We have a very dear friend of ours who will be leaving next week for a year. He's never had to deploy and his 9 year old daughter is very sad and emotional, as is to be expected. She's come to me for comfort knowing that I too, as a child, had to deal with my dad being gone.

I'm glad to hear that your friend's family is back together again, safe and sound! Gets me a little choked up too.
